Located nearly midway between both Auckland and Wellington, Mt Ruapehu is the North Island's premier skiing destination. An active volcano, Mt Ruapehu is home to both Whakapapa and Turoa - the North Island's only commercial ski areas, offering an expanse of varied terrain, arguably some of the most interesting and challenging in the country. Tukino, located on the mountain's eastern side, is a much smaller club area with more limited facilities. Nearby accommodation can be found at Ohakune, National Park, Turangi, and Lake Taupo.

On the western side of the North Island, perched on Mt Taranaki, Stratford Mountain Club provides a different experience entirely, with fewer people and the community feel of a small club operation. More Ruapehu skiing information
